In 1961 a Japanese businessman, excited by Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom in Anaheim, decided to make his own version- Nara Dreamland. The park had its own bargain basement castle and a Matterhorn that looked like it was made out of cardboard. Walt Disney was so upset that he stopped talks about building a Disneyland in Tokyo. (Tokyo Disneyland wouldn't open until 1983.) Nara Dreamland would eventually close in 2006.
