Music Mondays: “Glee”

The music industry has been on the decline for at least a decade. While it has often blamed the rise of the internet and the easy availability of piracy, the music industry’s problems are deeper than that. As the 2000’s wore on, it seemed as though the sales records racked up during recorded music’s heyday were not likely to ever be beaten. In 2009, Twentieth-Century-Fox Television introduced a show that would not only challenge decades-old sales record but would  regularly break them. Glee, a show about a high school glee club, would dominate the sales charts becoming a phenomenon that re-invigorated the recording industry and set its own seemingly unbeatable records.

Glee released 460 singles, of which a record 207 charted, beating legendary acts like The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Queen. This amazing sales record will not likely be beaten, though the show’s music has yet to prove that it has as much staying power as the acts whose records it shattered.

Theme Park Thursdays: Real Life in The Parks

When Disney California Adventure remodeled its front gate, the entry structure was modeled after Los Angeles’ historic Pan Pacific Theatre.

The tribute to the Pan Pacific is bittersweet, since the buildings in the original complex were demolished or destroyed long ago.

Long before the front gate tribute, however, there was already a tie between Disney Theme Parks and the designers of the Pan Pacific complex. The same team that designed the Pan-Pacific Theatre designed the DISNEYLAND Hotel. Both the theatre and the Hotel were designed with the same mid-Century atomic age style architecture that is more popularly referred to nowadays as “Googie”. The same optimistic look into the future found inside Tomorrowland spilled out into the contemporary futuristic look of the DISNEYLAND Hotel.

Speaking of “contemporary” design, the first hotel to open at Florida’s Disney World complex was designed by the same firm that designed the Pan-Pacific Amphitheater, the direct inspiration for Disney California Adventure’s Main Gate. Disney’s Contemporary Hotel had a revolutionary design in which each room was outfitted off-site then slid into place with a crane. Like its older sibling, it is directly connected to the monorail system, only this monorail glides through the hotel’s cavernous lobby- A much appreciated amenity considering Florida’s humid climate!

Toontown Tuesdays: A Cromulent Substitution

When Twentieth-Century-Fox originally approached Matt Groening to produce short cartoons that would air on The Tracey Ullman Show, they wanted him to base the shorts on his comic strip Life in Hell. A meeting between Matt and Fox executives was quickly scheduled and he prepared some concept drawings for them to look at.

While Mr. Groening sat in Twentieth-Century-Fox’s waiting room, however, he began to panic. These were his characters, his life's work. He would have to sign away his rights to them to get these cartoons made. What if the show got canceled? Matt pondered walking out of the building completely.

But then, he had a spark of  inspiration. He quickly began drawing a strange looking family. The cartoon could follow their adventures. He wasn't sure if the network would like the idea, but at least he wouldn't burn any bridges by walking out.

The executives loved the idea. Using his Life in Hell characters might have been too edgy. But this dysfunctional family? They'd be perfect. Strange to think that the phenomenon that became The Simpsons began on a whim.

Fox’s Family Guy To Take Over DISNEYLAND Park

Twentieth Century Fox’s FAMILY GUY To ‘Take Over’ DISNEYLAND in Limited Time Event

Anaheim, CA (FLN)- The DISNEYLAND Resort announced a limited time event in which the FAMILY GUY characters, newly acquired as part of The Walt Disney Company’s purchase of Twentieth Century Fox, will ‘take over’ DISNEYLAND Park. “Guests will know from the very beginning that something has changed when they encounter the face of Stewie Griffin in DISNEYLAND’s iconic flower bed,” noted park spokesperson April F. Ewell, “Guests will love taking pictures in front of Stewie’s scowling face!”

Old Abe Lincoln will take an extended vacation as Peter Griffin moves into the Main Street Opera House! “Great Moments With Peter Griffin” will feature America’s favorite dad as he burps and breaks wind on stage, all presented in Fox Smell-o-vision!

Ever wish that you could shrink down and go on an adventure inside Peter Griffin’s body with Stewie? Your wish will come true this summer as “Stewie Tours” takes over Tomorrowland!

The festivities continue at DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE as Family Guy’s Quagmire takes over the Pixar Pal-A-Round! Every fifteen minutes Quagmire will make lewd comments at female park guests in delightful and hilarious ways!

The park’s signature attraction- Soarin’ will get a ride update that will allow guests to fly high above Quahog. “Patrick Warburton already did the safety spiel at the beginning of the attraction, so it was easy to update the attraction,” noted Disney Imagineer Langdon Alger.

These overlays will open on April 31, 2019, noted Ms. Ewell and are just the beginning. “We can’t go into too many details, but just think how much fun it would be if the gang from ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ took over ‘it’s a small world’ it will be amazing!”
