Music Mondays: Beauty and the Beast

It had to be fate. Separate elements and talents came together at the perfect time to create a perfect piece of art- Beauty and the Beast. The only animated film ever nominated for Best Picture, the film quickly gained a spot as one of Hollywood's classic films.

After the success of The Little Mermaid, Disney had high regard for its songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who were quickly given the sort of control over their projects that had previously been granted to the Sherman Brothers years before. This ace songwriting team was able to help craft an entire film that would become Beauty and the Beast.

It is nearly impossible to determine which of the film's many songs is the best, but certainly one of the greatest is Beauty and the Beast, a song sung by Mrs. Potts that caps off the whirlwind romance between Belle and the Beast. Sung by Angela Lansbury, the song became a classic, winning Best Song at the Academy Awards.

Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly

Just a little change
Small, to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the Beast

Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever just as sure
As the sun will rise

Tale as old as time
Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast.

Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast.
